17′ laptops have their place, of course. If you stay put in one spot for 90% of the time but need something you could take, consider a 17′ screen. Overall, this laptop size is too massive to use at cafes, too big to fit into bags, and overall annoying to carry around.

Instead get a laptop that has a 15.6 inch screen or less depending on your preference. In addition, consider getting a device that has a built in graphics card and a touch screen.

Touch Screen – Optional but important

I can’t tell you how fun and valuable having a touch screen is for an online class environment. You can circle items on the screen, write words and have greater flexibility, control, and fun when teaching.

In addition, it can also be a great backup if you don’t have a mouse for whatever reason. During a class, we had a teacher whose mouse broke before class. Because he had a touch screen, he could complete the lesson objectives and avoid a potential teacher no-show for himself.

Storage Space – You will want an SSD instead of an HDD for modern laptops. Solid-state hard drives are much faster, and your computer will run faster. The only trade-off is storage space. It’s common to get a computer with a 2TB amount of space or more in an HDD, which is way more than you’ll most likely need. SSDs are still in the 128 to 1TB range.

Battery Life – The larger the screen, the less battery life you can expect from a laptop, as a rule. For online teaching, your computer will likely be plugged in, so for online teachers, this is a minor issue to take note of.

The only issue we experienced with using the headsets was the build quality. For the price, these are less durable than we would expect. If you pull on the wire incorrectly, we noticed the audio dropped on one side of the headsets (but quickly came back).

Let’s cover what VIPKID online teaching job is like currently:

• Be eligible to work in the United States (except CA, CT, NY and Washington DC) or Canada.
• Native English speaker.
• Bachelors degree or higher.
• TEFL certificate required if your bachelors is non-education.
• $7 per class base pay.
• Flexibility with no minimum hour requirements.
• Curriculum is provided for you.
• You’re welcome to use your own teaching props but it’s not required.
• VIPKID classes are 1 to 1.
• Class time is for 25 minutes.

How much does VIPKID pay?

VIPKID now pays all teachers (including veterans) $7 per 25 minute class regardless of qualifications or performance in the interview.

With the performance bonus, you can expect to make about $7.80 a class or $15.60 an hour. This is a change from the old variable rate of $7 to $8 which was based on your interview.

Pay Structure Explained

As a VIPKID teacher you can expect to get a base rate of $14 an hour + an incentive bonus where your hourly rate comes out to about $15.60.

The way the new pay structure at VIPKID works is that it’s first based of how many classes you have taught. The more classes, the higher your tier. Then it’s based on how many classes you teach each month. The more classes, the more per class you earn.

Please note that the pay per class is not cumulative. That is, if you were teach more than 181 classes, only classes past 181 would be paid at the 181 class rate. The rest of those classes would be paid at their respective rates.

For most veteran teachers this is functionally pay decrease of about $1.50 per class. But again, it depends on how many classes you teach.

They are one of the best online teaching company to work with, but if we had to point out a big drawback, it would be the strictness with which raises are issued.

The current pay structure for VIPKID has been updated as of 2020 and all new teachers can expect a base rate of $7.50 per class (or $15 per hour) with a variable $1-2 bonus per hour added.

How much can you make with VIPKID realistically?

I’m going to assume you’ve been teaching for a few months, you have gone through all the certifications for all the different types of class and you’ve been opening hours during the week and on the weekend.

With VIPKID it’s possible to make $300 to $1500 (max) a month now. It’s sill a great side income, but it’s not as lucrative as it used to be.

The hourly rate you’ll get is roughly $15.60 so it’s just comes down to how many hours you do.

It’s possible to do 4 classes a night, Monday to Thursday (6am to 8am NYC time)

On the weekend you can do classes all day as kids are not in school, but the catch is that in America that means in the middle of the night. If you’re an ESL teacher in Asia then you can do weekends.

So if you’re aggressive and do 4 classes every morning from 6 am to 8 am Monday to Friday that equals $156 a week or $624 a month.

VIPKID Teacher Requirements

The requirements for teaching English online with VIPKID were as follows:

Be a US or Canadian citizen. This was VIPKID’s main selling point and was non-negotiable as Chinese want a North American accent.

Have a bachelors degree at a minimum. This is in place because Chinese law states that teachers must have a degree from an accredited university. This is normal in the teaching world of ESL and not unique to VIPKID.

Have experience working with kids for at least 1 year. You can be a coach or you could volunteer or be a teacher. You just need some experience working with kids.

VIPKID as with any online teaching company also has technical requirements for teaching English online. They are:

How Do You Get Hired With VIPKID

VIPKID takes a bit of work to get hired. They don’t want lazy people. It’s worth going through the process because once you’re setup as a teacher, you’re basically good to go and you only need to open hours and teach classes.

Step 1 – Apply to VIPKID

Do you meet the basic requirements to be a VIPKID teacher? Great! Go ahead and apply. It’s essential you have some sort of experience with kids so even if it’s something like coaching children after school, volunteering or whatever – indicate it in your application.

Step 2 – Short Interview

If you pass the requirements to be an online teacher, VIPKID will conduct a short interview with you. This interview will be with a Chinese staff member at VIPKID. It’s just a short 10 minute “get to know you” interview to see what you’re like.

You’ll have to answer questions related to VIPKID and your background and the goal of the interview is to simply see what you’re like as a person. For the interview make sure to wear a nice shirt, style your hair and conduct the interview in a quite place with a nice background.

You may be expected to teach a handful of slides. Again, pay attention to what they say in the emails you get. I personally had a 10 minute interview followed by a 5 minute demo.

Overall, it’s not too formal, but make the effort. You have a few different options for the interview:

• Interview express
• Coaching day meetup
• Simple interview

Recorded Demo Class

This is the new normal for VIPKID. The demo class is a bit nerve racking but just DO IT. You will have to record yourself giving a demo lesson. Yes it’s silly, but they need a way to see if you’re able to follow instructions and meet the lesson objectives.

It’s a one time thing. You do this once, you get hired and you’re good to go so just set aside time on the weekend and get it done.

Interview Express

This is for invite only and is typically reserved for highly qualified teachers who already have a few years experience teaching English online with other companies.

Coaching day meetup

VIPKID now hosts meetups all across America and Canada. You can attend one of these meetups and go through the hiring process in person.

Simple Interview

The simple interview is 6 slides long and is designed to expedite the hiring process for select candidates.

Interview Tips

Please have good lightning, a nice place to teach that has an appropriate background and a good internet connection. Also review the VIPKID applicant performance indicator.

For good lighting you need light on your face. You can use the light on your phone or better yet, buy a small lamp that can give you a nice looking glow. If it’s in the morning, consider using teaching near a window for natural lighting.

Your background is also important. At a minimum have a plain background with no distractions like laundry, animals or posters. At best, create a background appropriate for a classroom. Something like a map, large white board, stickers and your name are all fine. The background if your chance to show some of your personality.

Step 3 – Demo Class and Certification Center

Once you pass the interview you’ll have access to the self study section of VIPKID where you go through a self study process to learn about VIPKID and the various policies at work with the company. The self study part is your orientation to VIPKID so you can start learning about this organization.

You’ll be required to start completing certifications for different levels. VIPKID has levels 1 to 6. Most students are at the lower levels but there are some students at level 6. Depending on what level you choose to get certified for will dictate what lesson you teach.

For each level you can be asked to teach two different lessons. Prepare for both. The lesson is 10 minutes long and is with a mock class instructor.

Once you get certified for at least one level you’ll be given your contract. Make sure to certify for all levels as most students are at level 2, 3 and 4.

Step 4 – Sign Your Contract

The process from start to finish takes a few weeks. But once you’ve taught numerous classes with them, the lessons become easy and second nature. Allowing you to do minimum prep for each class.

When first starting, you need to review and prepare but after you’ve taught the same lesson over and over you’ll start to have mastery over the VIPKID curriculum. After your first month or two, you’ll be able to quickly and easily teach with VIPKID.

Step 5 – Open hours!

The last step is to open slots. Once you’re booked, check the lesson and review in great detail and prepare as best you can for your online class.

Frequently asked Questions

Do you teach the same students?

In general you will see the same students week to week. Again, it is up to the parent to book you, as such if a parent likes your teaching style you can expect to see the same kids every week.

As a VIPKID teacher, you will have “followers” and students who have list you as their regular teacher.

Is there any interaction with the parents?

No, the parents book you but the only thing you’re required to do is teach the lesson.

In order to maximize the number of classes you could get scheduled, we recommend you to be available for at least 8-12 hours a week (20 time slots per week roughly at 30 minutes per time slot) during Beijing peak times.

Things too look for in a webcam

If you’re looking for a way to make your video quality better, consider getting a small, inexpensive, dedicated webcam. Ability to adjust the position of the webcam

An underrated but beneficial feature of an easy-to-use webcam is that you can change the angle and position of the webcam, unlike your integrated webcam, and even mount it on a tripod.

In addition, some webcams, like our top recommendation, come with a handy little tripod to help you position the webcam as needed. This is important because you want to ensure you have a good teacher background, so being able to set your camera independently of your laptop is essential.

Focal length

You can also purchase this webcam with a tripod handle. We didn’t find this accessory particularly useful as we need a webcam for our laptop, not a vlogging tripod handle. But if you’re curious, it’s an option if you want a way to comfortably hold the webcam or mount it on your desk.

Last, this webcam has dual noise canceling microphones built in which help reduce ambient background noise and amplify your voice. It’s not a replacement for a dedicated USB mic, but it’s a vast improvement over your laptops internal microphone.

The main reason why this camera made our list is it’s 1 inch sensor. Because it has a large sensor size, you’re able to get a naturally blurry background with you in focus.

With that said, the C922 sill has excellent audio and records at 1080P. Your field of view will be much wider, colors more vibrant, the video more crispy and clearer, improved low light performance for those early mornings, and it sounds better.

This camera is a massive improvement over any integrated webcam and allows you to do fun things you previously could not do. Want to create YouTube videos? You can now. Need a camera to make a video introduction? This can do that too.

Pros:

Your iPhone – Windows or Mac

Yes, you can now use your iPhone as a webcam, taking advantage of the advanced camera system built in to all iPhone devices. The best part? Your phone charges as your using it as a webcam.

For Windows devices you’ll need to download Elgato’s EpocCam on your iPhone and Elgatos Camera Hub on your Windows laptop.

You will need to purchase the pro version of EpocCam as it removes watermarks and allows you to record at different frame rates and use the wide angle lens if you like, but don’t worry it’s a one time payment of $8. Well worth the price of entry.

Once you have both pieces of software installed, all you do is plug in your iPhone to your Windows laptop, fire up both the camera hub and EpocCam and your Windows laptop will detect your iPhone as a selectable webcam.

Using Continuity Camera, you can use your iPhone as both your Mac webcam and microphone. To turn on Continuity Camera on your iPhone, go to Settings  > General > AirPlay & Continuity, then turn on Continuity Camera.

That covers the best webcam options for online teachers. All in all, we love the Razor Kiyo Pro but it is a bit big for a webcam. If you want something high quality but smaller then the Insta360 Link2C is perfect.

Regardless, getting a proper webcam even if your laptop has an integrated webcam is a great idea because they are designed for professional use where your internal webcam is more designed to chat with family and friends. Just make sure you invest in a quality video lighting solution.

Without proper lighting in your room where you’re teaching, you could have the best camera on earth and it would still produce poor results.

A frustration that has constantly been voiced to us is why there is a requirement to have a degree to teach online in the first place with many online teaching companies. Why exactly do you need a degree to teach English online? That’s what we’re going to explain.

The surprising answer is that it’s for legal reasons. Most countries where you can be employed as an English teacher require you by law to have at least a bachelor’s degree to be eligible to obtain the countries-related work visa (see our guide on teaching abroad).

China, in particular, has implemented numerous reforms to help better regulate the online teaching space. As China is the largest market for online Teaching, in particular, these various requirements influence the online teaching industry.

Online teaching is treated no differently.

Even though you’re an online teacher based in the United States or Canada, you still need to meet the legal requirements set out by the country where your students live.

In the past, many countries, including China, were relatively lax about enforcement. Even ten years ago, you could land in a country like Thailand and secure a job teaching English even if you had no experience or degree.

Technically illegal, but that’s how it was. Emphasis on was. As countries develop (including China), enforcement and expectations increase. In Asia, it’s now a standard practice to possess a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL certificate.

But I see so mabt jobs that don’t require a degree.

It’s common to see in Facebook groups and ESL forums various posting about teaching English online or abroad without a degree. We at Teach and GO advise caution when engaging with these postings.

The first issue is that it may be an illegal operation. It may be an unscrupulous recruiter looking to make money on a commission. It could also be a small-time company that is skirting visa laws.

Lastly, it could be a position where you’re not technically or legally considered a teacher, so the rules around ESL teaching would not apply to you.

As it’s marketplace there is a vetting process in order to get accepted. But having a degree is not essential and there are plenty of teachers on iTalki who don’t have a bachelors degree.

Palfish is a mobile (or tablet) app. You can teach on Palfish with a phone or a tablet. We suggest using a tablet as it’s a much more enjoyable experience.

Palfish currently has two programs. A general “free talk” program where you have conversations in English and a Kids program. To anyone without a degree or who is a non native speaker the free talk option is for you.

Each of these tools serves a different function in the online classroom, but when you put them all together, they create a powerful tech stack that makes teaching online easy and fun while providing a professional experience for your students.

Let’s get to it.

1. Zoom – Your Virtual Classroom

First things first: you need a place to teach. For this, I rely on Zoom as my go-to video conferencing platform.

What makes Zoom stand out for online teaching:

• Simple scheduling: Setting up meetings and sending them to students is incredibly straightforward
• Reliable stability: We used it during the pandemic with over 400 students with very few problems – pretty impressive
• Screen annotation: You can take anything you’re looking at and start annotating over it
• Chat function: Works really well, especially when students have connection issues
• Fun video filters: These can add an enjoyable element to your classroom

Zoom has proven itself as the most reliable video conferencing tool for online education, and its teaching-specific features make it my top recommendation.

Zoom also offers some nice video filters that can add something fun to the classroom too. While this might seem like a minor feature, these little touches can make a significant difference in creating a positive, enjoyable learning environment that students actually want to be part of.

2. Zoom Whiteboard – Interactive Teaching Made Easy

Once you have your virtual classroom, you’ll need a whiteboard. Since I use Zoom, I recommend sticking with Zoom’s whiteboard as it’s actually one of the best out there.

Zoom’s whiteboard has all the features you’d expect from a whiteboard. You can write, draw, create shapes, add text, import images, and organize information in a visual way that helps students understand complex concepts.

But what makes it particularly valuable for online teaching is that it maintains the collaborative aspect that’s so important in education.

Key features that make it perfect for online teaching:

• All the standard whiteboard features you’d expect
• Student collaboration through annotation capabilities
• Ability to create up to three whiteboards before class starts
• Seamless integration with your Zoom classroom

The collaborative aspect is particularly valuable ; getting students to interact with the whiteboard keeps them engaged and participating actively in the lesson. This level of preparation and organization can significantly improve the quality and effectiveness of your online lessons.

3. Padlet – Fighting Online Isolation Through Collaboration

Online learning can make students feel isolated and disconnected. That’s where Padlet becomes invaluable for creating collaborative experiences.

Padlet has a really cool variety of collaborative boards that can help get your students collaborating instantly and also help them to be creative.

What makes Padlet special is not just that it enables collaboration, but that it makes collaboration immediate and intuitive. Students don’t need to learn complex software or navigate complicated interfaces. They can jump in and start collaborating right away.

Why Padlet works so well for my online classes:

• Variety of collaborative boards that get students working together instantly
• Helps students be creative while learning
• Perfect for activities designed specifically for online classrooms
• Immediate collaboration capabilities

Any activity that gets students collaborating with each other is crucial in the online environment, and Padlet excels at making this happen naturally.

The visual nature of Padlet also makes it engaging for students. Instead of just typing text into a chat box, students can add images, videos, links, and other multimedia content to their contributions. This makes the collaboration more dynamic and interesting, which helps maintain student engagement throughout the activity.

4. Bamboozle – Making Review and Testing Fun

I use Bamboozle in almost every class, and it’s become one of my most valuable tools for reviewing and testing student knowledge.

It’s the perfect way to review and even test your students’ knowledge of content you’ve been studying in class. Testing and review are crucial components of any educational program, but they can be particularly challenging in online environments.

Students may feel less motivated to participate in review activities when they’re not in a physical classroom, and traditional testing methods can feel dry and disengaging when delivered through a computer screen.

This is why using Bamboozle as a “warmer” and a s a review tool for testing is essential to my work flow:

• Perfect for reviewing content you’ve been studying in class
• Variety of games means no two sessions are ever the same
• Students always respond positively to practicing language this way
• Works with any age group – kids, teens, and adults (adults actually love it the most!)
• Great for end-of-class fun activities

I use Bamboozle not just for reviewing studied content, but also for general fun games. Remember, it doesn’t always have to relate to what you’ve been studying – mix it up with content that’s just entertaining.

5. WayGround – (Formerly Quizzes) Testing Without the Stress

Testing is a big part of any classroom, and for online assessment, I use WayGround for this as assessments are crucial for understanding student progress, identifying areas that need more work, and providing feedback on learning.

When you go to assign a quiz, there are a lot of different options that make the quiz a little less serious. This is the key insight about why Quizzes works so well. By making tests feel less serious, you can reduce student anxiety and actually improve their performance.

When students are less stressed about the test, they’re more likely to demonstrate their true knowledge and abilities.

Specific benefits I love:

• Time limits for activities
• Option to show answers after each question or after completion

• Power-ups and timers
• Leaderboards for friendly competition
• Fun music and memes after each question

You don’t have to use all these options, but incorporating some of them makes tests feel less intimidating and often leads to better student performance.

6. Staying Connected Outside Class

Maintaining connection with students between classes is crucial for online learning success. I have two recommendations based on your student demographic:

For Children: Class Dojo

Class Dojo is perfect when working primarily with kids because:

• Parents can get involved in the learning process
• Students earn points for good behavior in class
• Focuses on positive reinforcement
• Students can build portfolios
• Parents can track their child’s progress through points earned
• Document sharing capabilities

We use Class Dojo in our school, and students absolutely love it. The positive reinforcement system works incredibly well with younger learners.

For Teens and Adults: Google Classroom

For a more professional approach with older students, Google Classroom is ideal:

• Completely free to use
• Simple and straightforward interface
• Easy student access through invitations or classroom codes
• Only requires a Gmail account
• Share everything you need: videos, websites, documents, assignments
• Perfect for teachers who like giving homework

Both platforms are free and serve their respective age groups perfectly.

7. Winston AI – Monitoring AI Usage in Student Work

Lastly, as online educators, we need to address the reality of AI in education. While AI can be a useful tool for learning, it’s important to ensure students aren’t relying on it to the point where they don’t understand what they’re learning.

For this, I use Winston AI to check if my students used AI to complete assignments. My approach to AI in education is balanced:

Using AI is fine as a learning tool. Using AI to complete your assignments without understanding the material is not acceptable. Students should be able to explain and understand their submitted work

With tis, Winston AI helps me identify when students may be over-relying on AI assistance:

• Quick detection of AI-generated content in student assignments
• Helps maintain academic integrity while allowing appropriate AI use
• Enables conversations with students about proper AI usage
• Ensures students are actually learning, not just submitting AI-generated work

The goal isn’t to punish students for using AI, but to make sure they’re using it as a tool to enhance their learning rather than replace their own thinking and understanding.

These seven tools work together to create a comprehensive online teaching environment. Zoom provides your classroom space, the whiteboard enables interactive teaching, Padlet fosters collaboration, Bamboozle makes review fun, Quizzes handles assessment, and your chosen communication platform keeps everyone connected.

The key is understanding that each tool serves a specific purpose in addressing the unique challenges of online education: maintaining engagement, fostering collaboration, making learning fun, and keeping students connected to both the content and each other.

The training materials are impressively thorough and took several hours to complete. Since you’ll be teaching adults in workplace settings, the training includes valuable tips on industry-specific vocabulary in fields like pharmaceuticals and UX design. Areas that many teachers might not be familiar with in their day-to-day lives.

This detailed preparation helps overcome any imposter syndrome when discussing specialized subjects. While it initially feels intimidating, the training modules leave you feeling well-equipped and confident to handle various professional topics.

True to their promise, you can start teaching immediately after completing the training modules.

The Teaching Experience

Teaching on Twenix feels refreshingly casual and conversational. The platform provides lesson plans with topics and prompts, but there are no slides to manage. It honestly feels like having a paid conversation with a friend.
