13″ screen

This size is preferable if you’re strictly teaching online. You’ll get an extremely light and thin laptop with weaker specs. The 13″ screen size is the most mobile of the three and ideal if you do not want to carry around a heavier laptop.

14-15″ screen

The sweet spot. Not too big, not too small. Large enough to provide ample screen size for tasks like video editing and large enough to pack in high-quality hardware to make a performance-focused machine. size is ideal for work, play, and everyday use.

16-17″ screen

A big heavy laptop typically. Designed for professionals who need a desktop replacement. It may be too big to fit into some backpacks, and too heavy to want to carry it around with you regularly.

17′ laptops have their place, of course. If you stay put in one spot for 90% of the time but need something you could take, consider a 17′ screen. Overall, this laptop size is too massive to use at cafes, too big to fit into bags, and overall annoying to carry around.

Instead get a laptop that has a 15.6 inch screen or less depending on your preference. In addition, consider getting a device that has a built in graphics card and a touch screen.

Touch Screen – Optional but important

I can’t tell you how fun and valuable having a touch screen is for an online class environment. You can circle items on the screen, write words and have greater flexibility, control, and fun when teaching.

In addition, it can also be a great backup if you don’t have a mouse for whatever reason. During a class, we had a teacher whose mouse broke before class. Because he had a touch screen, he could complete the lesson objectives and avoid a potential teacher no-show for himself.

Storage Space – You will want an SSD instead of an HDD for modern laptops. Solid-state hard drives are much faster, and your computer will run faster. The only trade-off is storage space. It’s common to get a computer with a 2TB amount of space or more in an HDD, which is way more than you’ll most likely need. SSDs are still in the 128 to 1TB range.

Battery Life – The larger the screen, the less battery life you can expect from a laptop, as a rule. For online teaching, your computer will likely be plugged in, so for online teachers, this is a minor issue to take note of.

Weight – You want a laptop that weighs 5 lbs or less. Even 5 kg is now considered a heavy laptop. Weight matters, as there will be times when you’ll have your laptop in a backpack. You won’t want to carry around something serious for long periods.

Graphics Card – If you’re doing video editing or want to play games on your laptop, look into getting a machine with a dedicated graphics card. For strictly online teaching purposes, a graphics card is a non issue, as the built-in graphic process with your Intel chip is sufficient.

Processor – Your processor is the essential hardware in your laptop, apart from your motherboard. Higher-end laptops have the latest and most excellent models.

Operating System – The safest route is to get a Windows machine; I have yet, however to hear of anyone having an issue teaching online with IOS from Mac or Chrome IOS.

Touch Screen – A laptop with a touch screen is helpful when teaching online, as numerous platforms like VIPKID have an interactive classrooms. So with a computer with a touch screen, you can use your mouse and hand to demonstrate activities on the net.

These headphones are also wired, which we here at Teach and prefer for online teaching as there is no risk of a wireless connection giving out. Last, these headsets have an “on the ear” design, are not too big and bulky looking, and come.

The only issue we experienced with using the headsets was the build quality. For the price, these are less durable than we would expect. If you pull on the wire incorrectly, we noticed the audio dropped on one side of the headsets (but quickly came back).

The main reason why this camera made our list is it’s 1 inch sensor. Because it has a large sensor size, you’re able to get a naturally blurry background with you in focus.

A large display that is beautiful and colorful

If you’re going to be using a desktop setup, get a display that is simply stunning to look at. No need to sacrifice on size as you’re not going to be on the go.

Displays for desktops can be a plain matte finish or you can get something with an OLED display. We suggest going all out on the display as it’s one of the most important parts to your computer.

If possible, get a desktop computer with a touch screen as it makes class more fun an interactive for you as a teacher.

Get an all in one desktop

For online teachers we strongly suggest getting an “all in one” desktop computer. This design is where all the components are built into the monitor. It’s ideal because it does not take up too much space and it runs cool and quite. Essential for online teaching.

You’ll probably want to prop it up a few inches using a book, that’s what we ended up needing to do in order to get optimal sound using this microphone.

Also, like all lower priced microphones there is no mic gain control. Gain allows you to adjust the microphone sensitivity. Instead, you have to adjust everything via your laptop or desktop, not a big deal for a simple use case like an online Zoom class. Last, it comes with a built in pop filter which is surprisingly helpful.

The Blue Snowball is the little brother of the more premium Blue Yetti. It rose to prominence as a microphone of choice for aspiring pod-casters due to it’s surprisingly good audio quality.

This is the best budget microphone to get if all you’re looking to do is get something that will improve the audio of your online class. It has no advanced features as you should expect but it does allow you to use a headset of your choice and still have quality audio without pickup too much background noise.

Pros:

• Small. Seriously, this thing is perfectly paired with any laptop for improved audio.
• Good build quality and it’s portable.
• Much improved audio quality over your laptops built in audio.

Cons:

• Not for professional voice recording or YouTube videos.

Next it comes with a mic gain and four different polar patterns (stereo, cardioid, omnidirectional, bidirectional) so you can set the audio settings to your liking. We find that the cardioid pattern sounds best typically, but you may also like the stereo pattern.

It can also easily be mounted on any mic stand with ease, but the base stand is tall enough to where you can set the mic next to your laptop as you’re conducting class. Overall, we are quite surprised with this microphone as it’s a significant step up with regard to sound and features when compared to budget mics.

The features we really liked about the Solo Cast are obviously the sound quality, but it comes with a “tap to mute” button which is actually quite helpful in those rare instances when you need to turn off the audio quickly.

It’s mounted on a tiny stand that is adjustable to you can place the mic on your latpop and because it’s so small, it won’t be in sight on your webcam. Finally, it comes with only one polar pattern, cardioid. Which is best for teaching as it picks up sound in front reduces background noise.

If you want the best cheap mic that’s simple, well designed and small then consider the Solo Cast mic. It’s surprisingly good.

Alternatives to a USB microphone

External microphones are great because you can get high quality audio for your students. However, please be aware that you do have alternatives to look into.

Headsets for online class – There is an entire product category of headphones with built in microphones that are designed for chat. Some headsets even have noise canceling microphones built in too. If you’re required to wear a pair of headphones as you teach you may want to look into our buying guide on this.

Webcams for teaching – External webcams often come with their own high quality, built in microphones that out perform the built in, on board audio of your computer.

Best Microphones for Online Teaching
